As well as being fans of some of the most wild football shirts, here at Retro Football Kits, we’re also massive fans of some of the wildest hairstyles sported by footballers over the years. Let's take a look at some of the best….or worst!
Taribo West - The former Inter Milan, Nigeria and Plymouth Argyle defender. Despite having a highly successful career that saw him sharing the pitch with Kanu, Laurent Blanc & R9, he is best remembered for his wild & unusual hairstyles.
Bastien Hery - Whilst playing for League Two side Carlisle in 2015 Frenchman Bastien Hery sported this hairstyle which was labelled a “candyfloss puffball” and was likened to the Nando’s logo. Eeesh
Romania Squad - Romania - During the 1998 World Cup, the Romania squad bleached their hair after agreeing to do so if they managed to qualify from their group. They beat Colombia & England and drew against Tunisia in Group G. The team also made coach Anghel Iordanescu shave his head.
Beckham/Vardy/Carroll - What do Andy Carroll, Jamie Vardy & David Beckham all have in common? No, it’s not that they have all played for England. It’s the fact that they have all sported Cornrows at some point or another. Obviously.
Ronaldo - Possibly the most famous hairstyle to win the World Cup? O Fenômeno decided to leave a triangular fringe after shaving his during the 2002 World Cup. This was to draw away focus from a groin injury. It clearly worked as he scored both goals in the final against Germany.
Abel Xavier - The eccentric Portugese defender had sported his bleached look for several years and had various styles to accompany it. Here are just a few:
Marcelinho - This cult Brazilian midfielder not only amassed an array of clubs during his career but almost the same amount of hairstyles. We’re particularly fans of this ‘Fruit Pastiles Lolly’ style from his time in Germany with Hertha Berlin.
Loco - Angolan defender Manuel Cange Loco was apparently inspired by R9 with this look he debuted during the 2006 World Cup. He instead added some little twists or “worms” to the front instead of the Brazilians fringe.
South American Initiation - In South America, when youth players make their way to the first team they are required to have their hair cut by the first-team players. This leads to some of the wildest and most shocking trims you’re likely to see. Can we make this a requirement throughout football, please?
Ratinho - Taking his love for the game to another level back in 2015 was Brazilian midfielder Ratinho, who shaved his head to look like a football. Sometimes it might not be the beautiful game. We’ll let you be the judge.
